 When \mplibcachedir{<dir>} is not set, the default cache directory
 will be in the following order:

        $TEXMFVAR/luamplib_cache
        $TEXMF_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY/luamplib_cache
        ./luamplib_cache
        $TEXMFOUTPUT/luamplib_cache
        .
