On Thu, 5 Apr 2012 Markus Kuhn submitted an update to the

  upquote

package.

Summary description: upright-quote and grave-accent glyphs in verbatim
License type: lppl

Announcement text:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The upquote.sty LaTeX package changes the glyphs used by the \verb
and \verb* macros and the "verbatim" and "verbatim*" environments for
ASCII characters 27 and 60 to the "upright quotation mark" and "grave
accent" ones required by Unicode, ISO 646, ISO 10646, and many other
character set standards. This is particularly useful for typesetting
software source code.

The previous version 1.1 always used the textcomp package to produce
the desired glyphs, which can trigger undesired side effects (use of tctt bitmap font).

This new version 1.2 does not load any additional fonts as long as the
default cmtt font is used in its original OT1 encoding. Only if the default
font encoding or the tt font are changed, then textcomp.sty is
loaded and used to select the replacement glyphs, as before.

Benefit: the replacement glyphs come again by default all from cmtt,
eliminating the unnecessary use of additional T1 fonts, which
may exist only as bitmaps, may come with worse Type1 hinting, or
cause other printing problems.

There is now also PDF documentation.
